We used to love "outdoor radio operations." It gets you away from all the noise generated by computers, televisions, etc.
I remember a great night where we had a 200 foot tall wire held up by an advertising balloon. Hooked to a DX-160 receiver, with an 8 foot ground rod for a counterpoise. No homes around for miles.
You would not believe the signals that came rolling in overnight. Exciting!
You very likely have noise coming thru your AC mains wiring in the house. MFJ makes a filtered power strip -- model # MFJ-1164B -- something like this can really help your listening. Plug *only* the receiver into this strip and plug the strip into the wall.
Yes it is very interesting to DX outside the house.I often have qrm here in my home and if i try to DX outside i log a lot of interesting signals from all over the world.

Hey buddy.
Are those the original flip down feet on your 394?
I was looking at my feet the other day and seems like theres some plastic fatigue.
Just wandered if it was a common problem area...
Great vid... keep them coming...
