This video presents our submission for the 2009 Imagine Cup Game Development Competition.
THE GAME: ---------------------------- With a unique gameplay that pieces together the skillful thinking of the best strategy games with the fun and excitement of the classic Arcade Games, Choice brings you the taste of being a part of the changes your planet needs, in a fun and addicting way.
In this game for up to four players, you will be assigned the responsibility to help a territory around the globe achieve a specific UN Millennium Development Goal. To do that you need to pay attention to the people who are working together to solve the toughest problems facing us today, and with quick reflexes, get their aid to your territory. But thats not all! While doing that, you have to make your strategy and establish global partnerships in order to meet your goal before the other players and win the game.
With quick reflexes and sharp strategic thinking you and your friends are invited to save the world, one choice at a time!
A LITTLE BACKGROUND: --------------------------- We have been working on this game for about seven months now. The Game Design process has been by far the most exhausting task: keeping a game educational and fun, mixing strategy and arcade is quite a challenge and balancing the gameplay was really difficult. But the result is a game that, while entertaining and addictive, uses smooth graphisms to immerse the player into the experience of globally cooperating to solve the toughest problems that our planet faces today.
Most of this result was obtained after we have submitted the first version of the game to the XNA Challenge, a Brazilian game development competition. Though the basic idea remains the same, the previous version (also submitted to round 1 of Imagine Cup) was a lot different from the one seen on this video, and after achieving second place on XNA challenge we really worked hard, going all the way back to Game Design process, in order to improve our weak points.
Download link will be available soon. We sincerely hope you enjoy it. [=

I believe that the "technology" issue in the theme is to keep all categories in sync with the purpose of the competition (a technology competition). In the particular case of the Game Development invitational, the technology is the game itself, and our game is a powerful tool for teachin kids (8-15 yo) about the MDGs and the problems facing our world today, thus being itself a meaningful technology that "helps us solve the worlds toughest problems". Hope that answers your question. :)
