President Rajapaksa has said that the countrys proud history is a major strength for the rebuilding process.
The President said wonders can be hidden in ancient kingdoms such as Sigiriya. This museum will be able to house such things to display them to the future generations. This nation has safeguarded the Sri Maha Bodhi, the Tripitaka and the Tooth Relic as valuable assets, during enemy rule. The Buddhist monks protected the Sacred Tooth Relics. History reveals of museums which prevailed in the Anuradhapura Kingdom.
He was speaking at a ceremony organised to declare open the Sigiriya Museum, firming up friendly bonds between Japan and Sri Lanka. The opening took place under the patronage of the President and former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda.
The Japanese International Cooperation Agency granted 480 million rupees for the project. There are six exhibition halls which span 4000 square meters. It becomes Sri Lankas first environmental friendly Museum. It is also equipped with lecture rooms, an information centre and a theatre. There is also an electronic and print media centre with advanced technology. The President further reminisced that they were able to destroy the worlds deadliest terrorist outfit. Ministers Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Rohitha Bogollagama, Janaka Bandara Tennakoon, Rohana Dissanayake and Piyasiri Wijenayake, Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa and Chief Minister Sarath Ekenayake and Presidents Secretary Lalith Weeratunga were present.
