  • this was a great movie...the ending will have most humans in tears

  • One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever and especially coupled with the mystery and intelligence of the beautiful dolphin in the film or in reality.

  • @stitchesful (cont.) We should also note that the vocabulary the dolphins have is rather limited, & their capability of "mapping" (fully understanding, comprehending) **complex** *HUMAN* (i.e., *human*-*experience*-based) *concepts* is somewhat limited (their being an aquatic, non-bipedal, non-technological species). But they (especially "Pha") do see and understand the Terrells as "Ma" & "Pa". And, as Pha declares, "Pha LOVE Pa"...they communicate in English FOR HIM.

  • @stitchesful (cont.) It would be extremely difficult (not necessarily or especially *painful*, mind u, merely inherently difficult if not virtually impossible) for dolphins (or any other toothed cetacea) to produce the kinds of sounds they do in *Day of the Dolphin*. And, so far, no effort has been made to train/induce a dolphin (or, say, Orca) to do so. But whether it is absolutely impossible, I myself am not so sure, since the vocal range of dolphins is considerable. (cont.)

  • @stitchesful Yeah, in addition to Amazon, try DeepDiscount [dot] com. Terrell (Scott's character) is loosely based on the life & work of John C. Lilly, physician, biophysicist & neuroscientist. Lilly is also the basis for the Wm. Hurt's character (Dr. Eddie Jessup) in Ken Russell's equally haunting & superb film, *Altered States* (get that film & see *it*, too!!!). As for dolphins acutally being able, in principle, anyway, of making vocalizations similar to those in *Day/Dolphin* (cont.)

  • @MCP2012 Well, thank you again for all the info. I want to see this movie more than ever now, and I think I am going to buy it on either ebay or Amazon. The only thing I'd like to ask now is how realistic the movie really is. I remember my father commenting about this movie and saying that it was dumb in the respect that dolphins would never be able to be taught how to speak. I have no nothing about dolphins and am certianly no animal psychologist. so I have no idea.

  • @stitchesful This is definitely a SUPERB film: acting, direction, screenplay, &, of course, music. It is also one of the most poignantly haunting (or hauntingly poignant) films one will ever see. One of my very favorites of all time So rent it or buy at Amazon, but SEE it! Again, it is one the most enjoyable, yet poignant & haunting, films ever made!! (The "Nocturne" scene, which shows the father-"son" love between Terrell & Pha as they swim (underwater) together is priceless!)

  • @stitchesful The dolphins, "Pha" & "Bea", r kidnapped by some NWO corporativist types who plan to train 'em to use limpet mines as tools of political assassination. Once *those* plans go awry, both the dolphins & the Terrells r in serious danger. The dolphins would either be further trained or, more likely, destroyed. Either way, Terrell has to convince 'em that he (Terrell) is "not" (i.e., has ceased to exist), for they (the dolphins) refuse to abandon him otherwise. TEAR-JERKER!!!

  • @stitchesful "Pha" (or "Fa") is a male dolphin born at Terrell's research facility in the Keys, whose mother mysteriously dies shortly after his birth. Terrell & his wife raise it as their own child, of sorts. Later, for conjugal companionship, "Beta" or "Bea" is brought into the picture. The dolphins r taught & learn (to understand & themselves **speak**) English, the latter being rather hard for them to do, but they do it for Terrell, as they love & adore him. (cont.)

  • @stitchesful The Scott character (Jake Terrell) is indeed a marine biologist, linguist, & animal psychologist who, along with his wife, has been studying dolphins for many yrs in hopes of both determining their (level of) intelligence *&* communicating with them. Dolphins (and Orcas) have an encephalization ratio greater than chimps, almost as much as humans. But they r, obviously, non-technological. Terrell (Scott) seeks to understand & communicate with 'em. (cont.)

  • @MCP2012 Thanks for the info., but what was his purpose in becoming a surrogate father to these dolphins? Was it because he thought he'd be able to teach them how to talk? (Which he did, right?) Does he become a surrogate father to them spontaneously or is it something he plans on?

  • @stitchesful W/o spoiling (all of, anyway) the plot----SEE THIS WONDERFUL FILM IN ITS ENTIRETY!!----basically, what makes it so super-poignant/sad/tragic at the end is that the G.C.Scott character has to force the dolphins, who love him as a surrogate-father (especially Pha, whom he raised from infancy), to abandon him & his lab & (more-or-less immediately) revert back to the wild---in order to escape the BAD GUYS who wish to either capture 'em (for their own nefarious purposes) or kill 'em.
