  • DrMDK, autism was a population harder to teach & Lovaas showed that population learns.

Yea! Joanne Gerenser Ph.D for saying all children learn. Dr. Ole Ivar Lovaas at UCLA showed it by behavior modification.

In the past very few autistic children spoke. Now 90% of autistic children learn to talk expressively & the other 10% learn to communicate by sign language, the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS - behaviorally based), & the read/write program at UCLA.

  • Early Intensive Behavioral Interventions (EIBI) has been shown to be useful as an intervention for severe mental retardation .

Smith, T., Eikeseth, S., Klevstrand, M., Lovaas, O. I. (1997). Intensive Behavioral Treatment for Preschoolers with Severe Mental Retardation and Pervasive Developmental Disorder. American Journal of Mental Retardation, Vol. 102, No. 3, 238-249.

  • Dr. MDK,

Children w/ autism who seem like they will not learn can learn over 10,000 trials.

Make the intervention more efficient by teaching pivotal things & you can lower the needed trials & get them more remediated.

Lovaas at UCLA has evidence for ABA for severely handicapped & severely affected by autism. This is because it works.
