A slideshow presentation of the German Renaissance painter Matthias Grünewald. Grünewald is the subject of the 1938 opera by Paul Hindemith, "Mathis der Maler" (Matthias the Painter).
Hindemith also wrote a symphony based on themes from the opera. I have chosen the second movement, "Entombment", from Hindemith's Symphony, Mathis der Maler as the music for this video.

  • This painter is a magician of colours.. The Isenheim altarpiece is a brilliant 'book' that represents in religious images and colour an era of great social turbulences, with an Europe in deep spiritual crisis.

Without a doubt one of the greatest painters in the history of art and probably the most underrated in the same time..

I don't want to say anything bad about the "music" but - even if it was composed for him - it does not match at all with the art of this astonishing painter.

  • Thank you for your time and effort combining these beautiful and moving images with Hindemith's magnificent music.

  • Matthias Grunewald loved colors and music is sweet, sweet.

  • Small difference, but the Hindemith biography I read years ago indicated Hindemith wrote the symphony first. As such, the themes originated for the symphony and then were used for the opera. Thanks for posting this, a monument of the 20th Century.

  • The string writing of Paul Hindemith is sublime! The "chords that sigh" at the end of this movement are perfect examples of bitonality. Listen to the string interlude about 2/3 of the way through the 3rd movement as well... the gates of heaven seem to open.

  • could you also upload the first movement of the symphony? It's called "Engelkonzert". Would be very nice...

  • been to europe many times, never got to see "isenheim altarpiece",before i die,i want to see that cosmic jesus, and those celestial beings forming in the dark, unknown to mary, such psychedelic truth, rye ergot killed, and some probably on the lsd made future visions in europe
