Careless disposal of plastic waste creates environmental pollution because plastic degrades very slowly.

To tackle this problem the Balinese community held an event called "Free of Plastic Waste" last Friday.

Supported by the Coca-Cola Company, the community cleaned up the Nusadua beach area in Bali.

The general manager of Coca-Cola in the region addresses the issue.

[Sani Dwi Prasetya, General Manager, Coca-Cola, Balinusa]:
"Bali is ours, Bali belongs to the world and our children so let's keep this island free of garbage, not just for ourselves but for all those to come in the future."

Local communities at every beach in Bali also took part in the cleanup.

Organic and inorganic garbage is collected separately, with plastic waste being taken away for recycling.

It's an effort that's popular with the locals.

[Made Wirata, Member, Bali Off-Road Club]:
"Everyone should be concerned about the environment, put a stop to littering and choose between organic and inorganic waste for recycling."

Plastic bottles can take up to 1,000 years to naturally degrade.

  • @madquiver2 The reason trees are used for paper is because of Wm. Randolf Hearst! He owned alot ot forrests. Hemp would be better! Grows quicker and has a quicker turn over. Glass is cleaner, and decomposes easier. Plastic can take tens of thousands of years to break down. Residue leaches into your food and beverages that mock sex hormones and will make you sterile. There a pile of plastic floating in the pacific the size of Texas. Fish and mammals are eating this too. Sex change and sterility.

  • @1eyednewt sorry guy but you show a very poor understanding of the facts were does paper come from??? oh yeah... TREES!! kinda important! no? also, glass takes MASSIVE amounts of energy to produce, and it is fragile. I fully support a Bali clean up... but there is no way Bali will be "free of plastic waste" by 2013. my shirt is plastic. my shorts are plastic. my surfboards are plastic. its too late. the die is cast. the baby boomers started it... and china will finish it. its OVER! get real.

  • Glass and Paper is the way to go! Why did they ever change from that??

  • damn coca cola and all the rest of the corporate giants!

try to put a deposit on the bottles at the time of purchase and watch coca cola fight like hell to stop this effective way to control plastic waste.

( a deposit, if you are not familiar with the concept, goes like this:

when you buy a bottle of Coke, or water, or fruit drink, one pays, say, 10cents extra. when one brings the bottle back to the store or recycling shop, one is given the 10cents back. several USA states have it.
