Zona - Siberian Prison Camps

During two years, 2000-2002, Carl de Keyzer has documented daily life in 35 of the 135 prison camps in the region of Krasnojarsk, Siberia. In a territory as big as Europe, prisoners live in a "country" of their own, with specific rules and esthetics.
Headed by one General in charge, they constitute a huge free labour force of 1.000.000 men and women, from all over Russia, gathered in camps. Most of these camps were built in the 1930's, as described by Soljenytsin in his novel: "The Gulag Archipelago", and are now used as 'regular' prisons.

Look at the faces, and then the eyes, of the prisoners. There is a calm despair there, and it tells a disturbing story.

Carl De Keyzer started his career as a freelance photographer in 1982 while supporting himself as a photography instructor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. His interest in the work of other photographers led him to co-found and co-direct the XYZ Photography gallery. A Magnum nominee in 1990, he became a full member of the prestigious photographers collective in 1994.

The photographic work of Carl de Keyzer (Magnum, 1994) is a rare brand of documentation infused with a literary sensibility.
