Ned was confiscated from his owner by the USDA and placed with the Sanctuary Nov. 9, 2008. Every day with Ned was a gift. After nearly 6 months of Sanctuary and countless medical tests and changes in diet--with both good days and bad days--sadly, Neds health did not seem to improve. He just could not put on any measurable weight. But during those months, his comfort in his new home and with his caregivers showed improvement every day.

On May 15, 2009, Ned peacefully passed away with a caregiver at his side. It was later learned he suffered from a multitude of digestive problems, including extensive, irreversible ulcers and scarring throughout his intestinal tract—believed to have been caused by years of stress. We feel cheated by the little time we had with Ned, but cherish every single moment we were allowed to care for and get to know this most amazing boy/man elephant known as Ned. Namaste, sweet boy.

  • Did he ever get to interact with the girls? How did they react to him? thanks

  • @megaelectrolyte Because Ned was in quarantine undergoing diagnosis and treatment for his health ailments, he and our other female resident elephants did not get a chance to interact, although they could see and hear one another from adjacent yards.

  • Such a beautiful, loving memorial for Ned. I am crying as I type this. Your description of his physical condition when he came to the Sanctuary shows the extremely high level of stress he endured every day of his life until he came to you. Only a sad example of a human being could have done this to Ned. Thank you for your loving care of Ned. If you couldn't save him, no one could. At least he knew real love and caring before he went home to the Rainbow Bridge

  • Tears couldn stop seeing Ned boy shrinked to bone frm his sickness and his sickness is frm the long term abusing from our own humans. Is there nothing else that dos humans can do except to mis-treat abuse exploit these beautiful loyal sweet gifts from our holy God that created them to live in same earth breathing the same air walking the same Path?? How would you feels if you were being treated dis way?? PLS THINK, God gave u brain to think, sense to feel pain, a heart to love, not to do evils.
