Man Charged In Plot To Kidnap Woman

A man was charged Tuesday in connection with a plot to abduct a member of a famous local family, police said.

William Larry Fletcher Jr., 42, was charged in Johnson County District Court with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated robbery and aggravated battery.

Prosecutors allege Fletcher tried to solicit help in kidnapping the 64-year-old daughter of the late Kansas City developer Miller Nichols. Nichols was the son J.C. Nichols, who developed the Country Club Plaza and several other neighborhoods.

"He knew of her. I don't think that she necessarily knew of him," Johnson County Sheriff's Deputy Tom Erickson said. "She's probably scared and wondering why she ended up targeted as a victim."

The alleged plot was uncovered when someone tipped off authorities. Deputies said Fletcher was planning a home invasion at an upscale Prairie Village neighborhood that would lead to a kidnapping.

Fletcher was arrested Monday night at his girlfriend's home in Overland Park. He is being held on $500,000 bond.

KMBC's Bev Chapman reported that Fletcher served time in prison for armed robbery. He has been free for about a year.

Erickson said team work between law enforcement agencies helped stop the alleged plot.

"There was enough urgency from the detectives that we could get him in custody and actually prevent this from happening," Erickson said.

Police haven't said how Fletcher knew the intended victim or where she lives.
