Rogue Male, starring Peter O'Toole. A rare film from 1976, made as a birthday present for his wife, Sian, of her favorite novel. On holiday in pre-war Germany, Sir Robert, a skilled hunter, sets out to deal with Hitler - and finds himself on the run from both the Germans and the British as he creates a bolt hole for himself in deepest Dorset (England's least populated and most beautiful county).

  • Late news - a good quality PAL Region 2 DVD is now available on the UK Ebay

site - from Poland ! I've just bought a copy.

  • The reason this is so rarely seen is that it nearly caused a strike at the BBC. It was made on a very tight budget (£100,000 of £300,000 from memory) but all the crews etc., had only been paid for a TV production - someone at the BBC wanted to give it a cinema release - and a strike loomed as wages hadn't been at film rates of pay. So the BBC agreed never to show it again in the UK - good quality

copy was shown in Eire last year. A grainy DVD is available in USA.

  • The BBC radio production of the Geoffrey Household novel is being repeated on Radio 4 Extra at the moment. It's excellent: totally gripping.

  • I love this film its up there with my all time favourites I first broadcast by the BBC probably in 1976 and as a collector of television programmes since 1982 (i have thousands of rare mostly UK programmes on a vast array of subjects in my collection drama to documentary etc etc) I was looking for this wonderful movie for years before obtaining a copy. Recently the brilliant director of this movie Clive Donner passed away.My mum was Peter O'tooles housekeeper in Hampstead during the early 1980's
