HALIFAX, MA- Helicopter Crash (09-19-10)

Halifax, MA- A homemade helicopter went down in a wooded area in Halifax Sunday afternoon seriously the pilot, said state police.

"The whole helicopter was on fire," said Halifax Police Sgt. Ted Broderick.

It happened around 1:00 p.m. off Twin Lakes Drive, a quarter mile behind the Halifax Twin Lake Condo complex.

"This is a single-seat, you could call it an experimental helicopter," said Broderick. "We believe it's what they call a Mini 500."

State police said the pilot is a Scituate man in his fifties.

Crews had a difficult time getting to the wreckage because it landed in a swamp. The water was waist-deep on rescuers.

Two fishermen were being credited for helping to lead police and firefighters to the accident scene.

"The top tail was spinning and he went down," said rescuer Jeff Burke. "So we went in, drove to the end of the street and found him. Then we found the fire department and headed back down."

Once crews were able to get the man free from the wreckage, he was taken by a medical helicopter to an unknown hospital. Authorities said he had burns on 30 percent of his body.

Authorities said the man left from the Cranland Airport in Hanson but it was unclear where he was headed
