I really love the SLK. My wife drives an SLK350 with the AMG suspension. The SLK is a really fun car to drive. But its just not a match on the track for a Porsche Cayman S.

He doesn't figure it out at first, then he knows and gives me a passing signal. The first passing signal was in the wrong place for the Yellow group.

Video from feb 2008 at Motorsportranch.com on the 1.7 mile road race track during an TheDriversEdge.net event. For Details about this Porsche Cayman S click on my user name.

  • If the slk is "not a match" for your cayman, then why couldn't you pass him without his approval?

  • Simple, you have to follow the rules of the event that you are driving in.

At that event, passing without a point by is a black flag, and you are out on the sidelines.

  • "Not a match"... - It's all about the driving skills on a track!

  • True, driving is the biggest factor. But also the standard AMG suspension is a bit soft and lacks the feel to be a match for the Porsche in the corners.

  • It doesnt look you could get past "race style" when you had the inner bend! That you "won" this race by getting drive by handsign isnt very convincing to me. The only bad thing about the 32 is the 5 speed automatic which has no real manual mode. 465 nm of torque over a broad rpm band outaccelerate many of the smaller Porsches on the straight or out of bends, where of course the Porsche is the better car if both drivers are equally skilled.

  • @16vr6 It's true that the Porsche is a faster track car; but the difference shown in the video is primarily due to the fact that the SLK driver isn't very experienced!

  • @jonasd99 lol the "point" is you couldn't pass him!

  • The SLK is defo no match to a cayman on the track, the AMG is power spitting monster, with 354bhp (or around that) compared to 306bhp of the porsche.

However the porsche is mid engined and built with balance in mind and the merc is about being a bit more comfortable on the road, has a folding roof etc.

Not sure who would win a drag race though coz the AMG is quick from what i remember about driving one.

  • (A)utomatics are (M)ade for (G)irls.

Yeah, the PDK also is no fun, it is fast, but less driver involvment when driving.

Driving is everything! In my video, my stock SLK350 6-spd. passes Caymen S, Carrera S, Boxster S like they are nothing, and I run with two 911 Turbo's, eventually passing. I am on stock run flat tires even!

That said, the R171 chassis is better then the R170 of this video, my SLK350 is in same SCCA class as this SLK32 and the SLK55.

  • Its just the driver that determine the race

  • Yeah, SLKs are more your everyday sports/luxury gt cars. Porsche will always have better track cars. But as a college student, i am looking at a slk320 as my next car because of the everyday comfort.

  • The SLK is faster, but the Porsche has a better "chassis" and the porsche driver is better : no doubt!
