The only instrument of its kind in the world.... this is a lithophone made from Michigan's State Stone, the Petoskey Stone. The Petoskey stone is a fossilized colony coral from the Devonian Age... 350 million years ago it was a living organism, a hexagonaria percarinata. This single octave diatonic instrument was made by musician and edutainer, Tom Kaufmann. For more information, go to http://www.tinkertunes.com/Lithophones

  • Do you have to hunt for a specific stones, or you cut them to get the desired pitch?

  • @Max0Inq The stones are cut into 1/8 inch thick slabs, then I chose different pieces that were the right pitch to form a scale. I had enough to choose from so that I only needed to tune a couple of notes, which I did by cutting them shorter to raise the pitch

  • this is fudging amazing!!!

  • @marrydruli Thanks.... and since you're from Romania, you probably don't know that our local term for tourists is "fudgies" ... because we have a lot of fudge shops that sell lots of fudge to tourists. And tourists also love to hunt for Petoskey stones, so "fudging amazing" is an incredibly accurate comment ( or did you know that somehow?)

  • Great song choice.

  • With stone being so brittle, is it cruel that I have this image of you playing them live one day, going for a heavy finish then shattering a stone...?
