David Shepherd, world famous artist and lover of wildlife, and Steam Locos was at Toddington on 20th August to celebrate the 50th birthday of his steam locomotive 92203 Black Prince, a very fine example of 1959 vintage. David also launched a limited edition N gauge model of 92203. During the morning, a length of track was laid along the runninng plate of 92203 and the new model loco run up and down on the real Black Prince. Sadly, a fly-past by the Battle Of Britain Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane had to be cancelled due to high winds across England. The day turned out to be a good one nevertheless, with a marvelous cake appearing on the platform, of which I believe a piece may have been shovelled into 92203 via the firebox! The photographs were taken by Maurice Rowe, a man well known for his motorsport and aviation photography, who now is retired and lives near Tewkesbury. David spent time on his footplate and signed autographs while chatting to enthusiastic fans of his work. David is famous for his paintings of African elephants and giant steam engines at Nine Elms shed. The Gloucester/Warwickshire Steam Railway runs from Cheltenham racecourse to Winchcombe and Toddington in the Cotswolds. The Extension to Broadway is well advanced and makes the railway a true phoenix rising from the ashes story. Also in the sequence is the famous"Taffy Tank " 5619 that was rostered with 92203 on the day. David Shepherd can be contacted via his website at http//:www.davidshepherd.org Donations to the wildlife fund can also be made through this site. For more information about the railway visit http://www.gwsr.com. 92203 Black Prince is at Toddington most of the time, with occasional forays to The East Somerset Railway and possibly others. The gentleman with the little girl is a well known local photographer Nick Jones. Nick runs The Photo Studio in Tewkesbury 22 The High Street GL20 5AL Films can be turned around very quickly after a visit to the area and high quality discs from 35mm film are very reasonable prices. The shop is worth visiting for Nicks steam and railway photos taken over the years. David Shepherd is often at the railway working hard alongside all the other volunteers and is always happy to chat with enthusiasts.
