Týr - Ormurin Langi

This is a copy of their first live performance in the Faroe Islands,containing one song. It's taken from the local tv station,at a music competition called Prix Føroyar in 2001. Týr started in January 1998 in Copenhagen. We began to play what we thought was Heavy Metal loosely based on Faeroeses and Scandinavian traditionals. Later we have been told that ther correct term is Viking Metal, a term we had never heard before it was used by reviewers to describe our style. Today we lean more to the traditional side that we did to begin with. We took a long time to get the band up and running for real. We played a lot of music competitions in the early days, and our breakthrough in the Faeroes was in April 2001 in a music competition. We didn't win but one of our songs, 'Ormurin Langi', was on top of the radio chart for 15 weeks. In the autumn of 2001 the rumour of 'Ormurin Langi' had spread to Iceland. In the meantime we had done the recordings of 'How far to Asgaard' during which Jón Joensen left us. When we released 'How far to Asgaard' through Tutl Records in Jan. 2002 it was on top of the Icelandic bestseller list for some time, and in March 2002 we made a small and really successful tour to Iceland with Terji Skibenæs replacing Jón. 'Ormurin Langi' was the most wanted ever on Icelandic radio. We shot the 'Ormurin Langi' video, our first but not our best, on that trip to Iceland. The following autumn Pól Arni left us, just after shooting the 'Hail to the Hammer' video in the Faeroes. We played the following winter in Norway and Latvia with Allan Streymoy, though not remotely with the same success as in Iceland. Allan left us early in 2003 and we were in dire need of a singer and we were also working very hard on the second album. We felt we needed to work fast to keep our heads above waters with all the line-up problems and in June that year we released 'Eric the Red' on which Heri Joensen sang more or less as an emergency solution. After that we played around a bit, the Faeroes, Iceland, Denmark, Poland and Russia. On that trip to Poland we made the 'Regin Smiður' video. We toured on with the same album in 2004 adding Germany and Finland to our list and that is where we found our real audience. We also had more line-up issues that year when we almost lost Terji who was replaced temporarily by Ottó Páll Arnarson from Iceland. We didn't play abroad in 2005 concentrating all our energy on the third album and to get a deal with a record company and a booking agent, which we knew was crucial to secure the future for the band. We got both and we are really exited about Napalm Records and L!sten Up Management. Also we are confident that we will release our best album so far in 2006. This is our experience till this day. Our line-up has stabilized and we all agree that the only way out of this band is death or severe mutilation.
