The Microsoft Research team behind the surface computing and Sphere projects is showing something new at the company's TechFest today: A computer that projects images onto an overhead dome and lets users control the experience with their hands in mid-air. For now, the project is called "Interactions with an Omni-Directional Projector," but they're looking for a snappier name. Here's a video of Microsoft researchers Hrvoje Benko and Andy Wilson giving us a demo this morning.

Of course, fulldome planetariums have been doing such projections for a few years now. The camera is an interesting touch. Wonder if MSFT talked to any planetarium folk about this to see how they could use it/to find out what the state of the art is in fulldome technology?
