Poppy Day is being commemorated worldwide remembering war heroes who shouldered the task of building a free country dedicating their lives on behalf of the unity of the motherland.
The Poppy Day commemorating the gallant soldiers who gave up their lives in the World War was held at the Vihara Mahadevi Park. Poppy Day is commemorated internationally on second Sunday of November. It was started in 1921 and proceeds from the sale of Poppy flowers are used to fund the welfare of the families of war heroes.
A ceremony to commemorate the war heroes who made supreme sacrifices in giving an opportunity for the entire nation to live with pride was commemorated at the Vihara Mahadevi Park in Colombo this morning. The event was organised under the patronage of President of the Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemens Association General Hamilton Wanasinghe.
It was followed by the observance of two minutes silence in remembrance of the war heroes who gave up their lives on behalf of the countrys unity and territorial integrity.
The offering of floral tributes to the War Memorial took place after multi religious observances.
A notable feature was the presence of soldiers representing many countries including Nepal, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and the United States.
