Some boring info from my Purcell book: text by John motteux and music by Purcell. First sung by Miss Cross in The Mock Marriage by Thomas Scott. The song had more success than the play from what I can see and has nothing to do with the action of the play. Obviously I have too much time on my hands! Thanks for posting. Interesting!
