@goatkiller68 im an abu garcia user and i've own a couples of abu reels. the new one i have is MGX. u should try MGX then u'll get what i've been trying to say. MGX doesnt have magnetic brake but its work well by utilizing a centrifugal brake (vertical motion). FYI there are a numbers of reels that have both brake mechanism and merely was not practical to me. yes u can fine them but it was a bit complicated to do so. any idea? thks
@armjamal1 you can according to abu garcia. i watched the review on you tube. and their manager said that you can only use 1 or both to fine tune them.
@goatkiller68 hmmmm i dont think so. centrifugal brake works at early casting stage while magnetic brake works at the end just before a lure hit water surface. if u set centrifugal brake to OFF, u'll get a backlash right after u throw ur bait (spool at loose setting). magnetic brake doesnt help so much to overcome this prob and i even think that we dont need magnetic brake at our reel actually... just enough with centrifugal & spool setting like MGX does.
@armjamal1 i think you can turn one of the options for the brake off. like you can only use the magnetic brake or only the centrifugal brake if you want
Thanks for the info. Just went to Bass Pro and picked one up today. I have played with it in my back yard for a little while and its backlashed on me a couple of times. But keep in mind this is my first bait cast reel. I have always been a spinning reel kinda guy but my buddies finaly talked me in to buying one. So far I like it, im just gona need some more practice with it and find the right setup like you stated. Goin on a fishin/camping trip in 2 weeks so i better get to practiceing!
i have that exact old school model i love it you can never go wrong with Abu
