A UN report says it will cost up to $1bn and take 30 years to clean up the damage done by decades of drilling by Shell.

Oil exploration in Nigeria's south for several decades has had a debilitating effect on the environment of the region.

Shell, the Anglo-Dutch oil company, has been accused of serious failures in its handling of the pollution in the Niger Delta and shirking its responsibility.

Activists have demanded that Shell's licence be revoked for the environmental disaster.

But with 90 per cent of the government's revenue coming from petroleum exports, oil companies seem to have clear political leverage over the issue.

Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege reports from southern Nigeria.

  • go to hell . ignorant prick.

  • fuck dese niggers

  • how?

  • i hope these people dont think that the normal people know about this..........its basicaly a secret until some ppl find out nd then it goes out in the media after it happens

  • Ya straight to the point - instead of people arguing about where the fault lies and separating themselves from it because its happening in a far away country or to people that one can't identify with - your comment is the bottom line and everyone must wake up to this and realize that the world is a small place now with oceans and air currents we all share and if we allow the exploitation of environment and human rights for one we are at risk also.

  • Nigeria a country which is virtually run by $Hell who are making billions yet it retains a high level of poverty, with 63% living on below $1 daily.

  • yes and 50 years ago when the spills started there were rebels, right...u know nothing obviously

  • Having worked in nigeria and watched local rebels damage oil pipelines wither by cutting or explosives I think they can clean there own mess up.

  • thats the thing, the nigerian govt officials all have mansions in the states. they take what they can when they are in power, then retire to their overseas houses.thats why it doesn't really bother them what happens in nigera
