When it premiered in 1967,"Super President" was in tough competition opposite two Hanna-Barbera cartoons, "The Fantastic Four"(ABC),and "The Herculoids"(CBS),which clobbered it in the ratings. David DePatie quoted as saying this was one of the worst projects we ever did. And righteously so as one of the worst cartoons ever made.
for yrs i have been trying to find anyone who could remember this cartoon and no one could. i was thinking i made it up, but thanks to youtube, i can claim my sanity.
According to Wikipedia, DPE's Super President (Starring the voice of Paul Frees as U.S."president" James Norcross/Super President) ) premired in 1967 & lasted only 1 1/2 seasons. It was pulled off the air by NBC TV after critics & TV Watchdog groups found it tasteless after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy back in 1963. It was one of DFE's earliest Super Hero shows to date & that was before the Fantastic Four aired twelve years later in 1979!
DFE's first superhero series was "Super 6," one year before "Super President." Coincidently, during its first season, "Super President" aired on NBC Saturdays at 9:30 am, opposite Hanna-Barbera's version of "The Fantastic Four," which was on ABC.
You're right but I was referring (& forgot to add) that it was DFE"s first venture into the "serious" ( or drama) superhero cartoon. Coincidently Super President had both VOAs who were the voices of Ben "The Thing" Grimm in The Fantastic Four Cartoons. Paul Frees (who did the voice of the Thing for Hanna-Barbera's version in 1967) & Ted Cassidy (who did the Thing's voice in DFE version in 1978).
