IMO the problem was not the ethnic clubs. Brisbane City were in the NSL from 77 to 86, in the area of Newmarket Wilston Grange and Lutwyche there was Brisbane CIty in the NSL, Thistle in the Bribane Premier League and Lutwyche Utd, Newmarket and Valley Trident in the Brisbane Second division. So that is 5 semi pro clubs in an area of 3 x 3Kms. There was just too many clubs with a small following. Perhaps some of these clubs should have merged. Is there a similar example in the other capitals?
@09lockwood if some australians weren't such cry babies and allowed ethnic based clubs back, you would get this type of crowd. Not that Glory were ethnic based, but when they sold out Subiaco for a final with 40,000 plus fans in a country where aerial ping pong rules everything that was impressive. NSL's downfall wasn't the ethnic based teams, it was the way Soccer Australia promoted the sport. The sport now may have a fancy name, but its fan following has dropped.
@bryanite ithe a-league is a fucking bore!!! there is no passion, no nothing. A watered down league just because people couldn't handle the ethnic based clubs. I've been to one maybe two games since the switch. When it was NSL I would never miss a game. Even when my team was not playing, I would go to a game. The league now is still not the greatest in terms of skill, so take out the color the ethnic based clubs bought to the games and well you have a sleeper. Zzzzzzzz.
@bryanite Dude, you always go off-track with all your comments. What do you care who I support or which matches I attend? I don't care what Sydney Croatia means to you or who will you support or what you think of the old NSL. Live your life and just support the game.
Still going for Melb Knights? Or converted to Melbourne Victory now? lol. I heard that the Melbourne Heart will have a fair bit of South Melbourne supporters converting. Were SMFC your sworn enemies from NSL days past? Or were Preston? Or Sydney Croatia? =P
Just FYI, Sydney Croatia means nothing to me, i didn't support ethnic-based teams :) Thank god for the A-League!
