- The invention of scuba has freed Calypsos team to maneuver underwater deeper, longer and less encumbered. By contrast, Greek divers, who have gathered sponges from the sea floor since ancient times, work in metal helmets and weighted boots. Tethered to their boat by twin umbilical cords, a lifeline and an air hose, they can only inch clumsily across the sea floor, painstakingly harvesting the living sponges.
- L'invention du scaphandre autonome a permis à l'équipe de la Calypso de manoeuvrer plus profondément et plus longtemps sous l'eau, tout en étant moins encombrée. En revanche, les plongeurs grecs qui ramassent les éponges au fond de la mer depuis la nuit des temps, travaillent avec des scaphandriers en métal et des bottes lestées. Attachés à leur bateau par deux "cordons ombilicaux", le câble-guide et un tuyau d'arrivée d'air, ils ne peuvent qu'avancer maladroitement au fond de l'eau et ramasser péniblement les épongesvivantes.
