Hey!
This is another video in my "20 of the best of..." series... This time however it's only 10 of but it's all explained in a video, so I'm not going to repeat myself here. ^__^ It's all about 3D FPS games for Amiga this time & even though there are many ports of PC FPS games for Amiga I've only covered Amiga native ones. This means that they were only available for Amiga at the time of their release (and they still are) & may be sort of more interesting to an average viewer as they're not your typical PC crop of a FPSes. So, enjoy the video, comment & eat some vegetables & fruit as they're what your body need. ^__^

Looking at this video, it seems two things were popular amongst FPS makers at this time.

    1. They liked making FPS games in portrait orientation rather than landscape.

    2. They liked pitch-fucking-black darkness.

I think there can be only one answer to that... FPS, FPS and most importantly FPS. Well, it wasn't easy to code those on Amigas, at least not as easy as on PC with dedicated graphic cards so it was most likely used as a trick to keep FPS at reasonably high value.

interesting vid, never heard about the iron gate! Never played citadel either, but it looks like i haven't missed much. Completely forgot death mask, but i found it HUGE fun back then! (even worked on my A600 iirc?). Monstrum. wha? You forgot some others like genetic species.

But in the end: alien breed 3D is/was still the best (closely followed by AB3DII TKG, the level design just wasn't as good, though the engine was very spectacular at the time!)

Well, both Citadel & Behind the Iron Gate were Polish games, so they did not get too much attention outside of Poland. But note worthy Citadel was actually a stunning game not only due to great music and intro but also as it runned smoothly on A500.

Yeah, I played Death Mask on my A500 back in the day, so it was bound to work on A600 too.

    Thanks for warm words! ^_^

A lot of early memories playing Death Mask with friends. Used to love the split screen component.. Although i seem to remember the characters having paper bags over their heads!

Alien Breed 3D, looked and sounded like Duke Nukem 3D in parts lol. I wasn't much of a FPS fan till on the PC so its nice to see some on the old Amiga :)

I have played all of these FPS games apart from Nemac IV. Do you remember how you got this game to work? Is it the disk or CD version?

played 'most' fps in the list, remember liking Fear and Gloom the most - a part from that - Trick or Treat should not be missed - that and Hired Guns local multiplayer altough I know its not really the same - greaaat fun on that square map with the centry guns and stuff

DOS-Age PC Gamer is not impressed. ¬.¬

The main problems of the Amiga with those "Brute Force Calculation" games is that these only need raw CPU power, and thats seriously lacking on an Amiga.

You folks rule(d) the world when it comes to 2D games, no questions, but your Copper and Hardwareblitter wont save you when it comes to 3D. ;)

    Wow, thank you sir.

I remember Gloom, Fears, Alien Breed 3D and Breathless but I almost forgot about Behind the Iron Gate and Nemac IV.

I also remember playing a lot of Death Mask though I have no idea why. The game was infuriating to say the least.

I've never looked at this old engines past modding the wad files to make new enemies, but it seems to me it would be more difficult and processor intensive to overlay the level with some kind of darkening effect. If you remember, earlier FPS games didn't start doing that until around Corridor 7. On the actually 3D ones, it's always easier and lighter on the GPU to burn lighting into the level rather than use dynamica lighting.
