Overview:

The University of Leeds has 32,000 students and 7,000 staff. Monique teaches in the School of Performance and Cultural Industries. One important part of design is to estimate the amount of material required for a particular garment. Using the example of an Elizabethan Ruff, Monique demonstrates that you first need to know the number of figures of 8 that are used in one inch of ruff and how much fabric that requires. From that you can calculate the fabric required for each neck. As the material cannot easily be joined, it is important to over-estimate by rounding up. In this process she uses measurement, proportion, estimation and rounding.
