Backstage Crush Chapter 5 pt. 2

The four girls returned with arms full of flee market finds and cheap versions of designer clothing and bags, to Katie’s dorm room around four o’clock. They dumped everything onto Katie’s bed and went to work. Katie quickly changed into the black dress she had bought that afternoon in Forever 21, and sat still while Mackenzie straightened, then curled her hair, and Jenny did her make-up. Vanessa searched through Katie’s closet and emerged with a pair of silver sparkling pumps.
“These will look perfect.” She said, slipping them on Katie’s feet for her.
“Thanks love.” She smiled. In fact, Katie hadn’t stopped smiling since she got off the phone with Kevin, whom she was meeting in an hour for dinner. Vanessa stood up and was going to go find a light jacket for Katie to put on over her dress, when Katie’s roommate entered. The girls actually felt the air get colder.
“Why are you getting all dressed up?” Amanda asked, with her usual cold tone.
“I’m going out to dinner.” Katie replied, trying to sound happy. It was hard with someone this degrading was in the room with her.
“And who would want to take you out?” Amanda asked, moving over to her side of the room.
“Kevi- ” Jenny was cut off by a gentle kick from Katie.
“That’s none of your business.” Katie looked in the mirror at her final outfit. Her fitted black dress came down just before her knees, and the thin straps were scrunched and held together with silver clips. Her silver shoes glistened in the lamp light, and her hair had never looked so perfectly done. Vanessa handed Katie her silver jacket, and her small black clutch and Katie was ready to go.
“Wow, you look amazing Katie.” Her three friends said in unison.
“Thanks guys. I better go, see you tomorrow girlies.” Katie hugged each one of her friends, and turned to wave before she left.
“Good luck love!” Mackenzie called after her. Katie just smiled and walked out into the early New York evening. She quickly caught a taxi and was on her way to meet Kevin, still smiling and eyes still sparkling.
