H. Keith Melton interview on the laser bounce listening device used by the CIA.

The CIA's version used an embedded prism in the target window.

If you have access to the target window, you can get a similar result by spraying certain brands of hair spray (AquaNet) on it. When the hair spray dries, it acts as a sort of retro-reflector and is fairly unnoticeable.

I thought just the laser beam on the window was enough... is the prism really necessary?

The prism acts as a retroreflector so the returned beam is in line with the transmitted beam. You can then detect the slight phase shifts (audio) in an interferometer setup.

Does anyone know how to set the audio source (like the cassette player) on the laser beam end itself to make the laser send the sound? Or do i have to use a mirror like everyone else?

You need a circuit to modulate the laser's power supply with the signal you want to send.

Replace the laser with a microwave Gunnplexer and it will go through walls....

Gunnplexers are indeed far more flexible in terms of the modulation locus. They bring a whole slew of new and unique problems for the constructor though... definitely starting to move out of amateurville :)

Most readily available Gunn's are too low a frequency and difficult to focus. Prepare to spend a LOT more money on a practical gunn-parabolic system (Unless you just wish to demonstrate the principle.

I have a cold war era 2010 doppler steth among my toys : )))))))

Surely that would be AM. The reflected signals being discussed utilise the doppler principle and are thus FM.

Both would work, but only FM matches the practical application under discussion. This is an important distinction if using the modulated laser to develop a receiver system with an appropriate filter chain.

I would say no, a reflex is not needed.

and it's possible to penetrate double windows even with a vacuum between them. just with conventional physics.

and with non conventional physics you can pick up anything at any depth in the building.

    but ultimately not undetectably
