  • UPDATE: caught some goldeyes nov. 3rd, bought a smoker at cabelas, used alder and hickory wood in about the same method as you showed. Tastes awesome! The texture is a little soft though. Thanks for the inspiration!

  • @conradsar

I put some of the fish in that video through the smoker again for another hour or so, and they firmed up a lot more.

  • Nice to see, i think this is the only smoked goldeye video on youtube. I've been thinking of doing this. I catch many of these beautiful fish but release them unless i need one for catfish bait! Canadians seem to love it, it looks great! Dont have time to build one, but i will be buying a smoker for sure.

  • @conradsar: They are definitely worth doing. Everyone loved them. I haven't caught any amount since that last batch. Hope I get some next summer.

  • We caught a few goldeyes but we filleted them like a walleye. Can we still smoke them like that??? Thanks

  • @bushwackersftw: lol! Guess I should check my vids more often. Yeah, you could smike the fillets, but probably better on a rack than on a hook.

  • Willow, choke- or pincherry wood are hard to beat for flavoring. Even with the heads- on goldeyes will fall off the hook at times if you smoke-cook them (high temp. I guess); putting the fish on wire mesh works not bad. Your end product looks great though.

    Great idea! Thanks.

  • @dav1099 : Nothing like Salmon. Probably almost more like a herring. They are quite an oily fish, which is what makes them so good smoked.
