Previously clamp skins ends were folded using a manual folder. Some of the safety hazards were repetitive strain, squashing fingers, noise, congested workplace, awkward posture. Other problems were inaccuracy and variation of parts folded, slow, mechanical set up, task too difficult for some employees. The works engineer designed a high speed servo driven pan break folder. The folder is fast, quiet, no mechanical adjustments, accurate, repeatable and is positioned at a good working height. The only operator control is a dial to convert the software set-point. The design engineered out any requirement for E/Stop circuit interlocks. The project took 4 months.
