This is a great escape close to town with a mix of grassland, woods and streams. It easily accessed from Stanmore Tube Station (Jubilee Line). The terrain is gently sloping and good for those looking for a moderately easy walk. I truly enjoyed the orchestra of birds, each kind tweeting their own tune.
There was an RAF station in Stanmore but it was not on the common , it was more towards the town. I When I lived in Harrow the station was active , not a flying base . There were more towards Mill Hill. Of course the original aircraft stuff was at Hendon although Some of the roads where I lived then were old runways main one Known as Mollison Way there was also a Rolls Royce factory going towards Burnt Oak that must have been De Havilands before that as the road was Dehavilands Way I think.

@HarrowonTVandRAFBP thanks for that correction. I had been a little bit too hasty in my research and a more careful read points out the error of my confusion. The harrow nature conservation forum provides a really good resource for information on the Stanmore Country Park in Stanmore --thanks for having a view.
