Without Patty no one would even care about this movie now it's a cult classic. Patty was over the top but I like others blame that on the director for not reeling Neely in a little. Patty had nothing to prove in this movie. But it took its toll on her major motion picture career.
Well, actually, Barbara Parkins did do a Screen Test for this role but her performance was about as exciting as watching Paint dry ~ so Barbara Parkins landed the less challenging role of Anne Welles and PATTY DUKE did the role of Neely - maybe her performance was a little over the top but without PATTY DUKE in the movie it would be a real snoozer.
Interesting to hear her readings here...they're much more realistic and believable than in the finished film. I think the director is partly responsible for her hyperbolic, campy performance.
She should have stuck with her instincts....they would have served her better.
Patty said she wanted that role so much because she had been "America's Sweetheart" and she wanted to break out of that and be seen as a real actress.
