SHE was once known for her glorious curves but this picture, taken two weeks ago, reveals Catherine Zeta-Jones is now a gangly shadow of her former self.

The 40-year-old is blaming her extreme weight loss on her gruelling schedule of eight Broadway shows a week. A Little Night Music has been running since November in New York, and Zeta-Jones still has five weeks of performances to get through.

Despite her worn-out appearance, the mother-of-two is doing so well on stage that she's been nominated for a Tony Award. But much of the talk at the nominee's press conference 10 days ago focused on her weight, not her work.

On that night she wore a baggy, heavily draped royal blue dress that helped to cover her bony frame.

One week later she stepped out in an even looser, batwinged red dress to a charity evening with hubby Michael Douglas, 65.

She has also recently been snapped in a boxy fuchsia dress and a black mini that flashed her gaunt thighs and prompted headlines such as the Daily Mail's "Thinner than ever: Catherine Zeta-Jones shocks fans with scarily skinnily legs".

Readers commented, "Eww, hate seeing inverted thighs! It looks like the muscle has wasted" and "Catherine Zeta Bones!".

This is not the first time the Welsh beauty's changing figure has sparked concerns. Towards the end of 2007 Zeta-Jones lost so much weight that reports surfaced suggesting that she had an eating disorder.

At the time she vehemently denied the rumours, laughing, "Do I look anorexic? How could I ever, ever be anorexic?"

She swore she had lost weight by exercising and eating better, saying she used to be a "bread girl... I loooooove bread."

But she had started "working out and not chomping down what I usually chomp down."

"I grew up with dancers, anorexia and other disorders were common, so I learned how to deal with [diets] without losing my limit. My muscles have memory from the time I danced, and it's quick for me to get back in shape, but I'm not fanatical.

"I think it's awful, this competition in the US between actresses who just had a baby to see who's first to get back to their normal weight. It's insane. I find this wave of super-skinny women scary."

Other stars whose skeletal frames are under the spotlight include grungy Gossip Girl starlet Taylor Momsen, 16, who is said to have vomited on the set of talk show This Morning a few days ago. Momsen, under fire after revealing an obsession with knives, claims her emaciated appearance is due to a nasty bout of food poisoning
