Angelika Kirchschlager sings the aria of Ariodante "Dopo notte, atra e funesta" in act III of the eponymous opera from Handel. Les Talens Lyriques, Christophe Rousset. Paris, Théâtre des Champs Elysées, March 2007.
It is not too slow. You are all just used to it faster, and it does work both ways. She is clearly struggling to capture the affekt, because her technique is beginning to fail her.
It is way too slow. This aria has to sparkle and this just doesn't. Ms. Kirchschlager has a beautiful voice, however this is not her rep. It shows off her weaknesses too much. She tends to cover the top notes and this piece is not that high, she should not need to do that here. I agree with SkateNater below - she should stay away from Handel.
I was listening to this recording for hours on repeat before I even thought to look down at the comments. I didn't think people could be so critical of a song... I still enjoy it very despite the crap everyone is posting. Try being more positive, people.
@SkateNater " Also, does she know what a trill is? The ones she did attempt were such massive failures, and she omitted quite a few others (that, or they were so bad I could hardly tell them apart from the vibrato)"
LOL.... don't hold back :>) - but I have to agree, the full performance is only a mere shadow compared to Sarah Connolly & Ann Murray performances...
A notable composer of Opera seria was Leonado DaVinci! I didn't know he wrote operatic music! His work was POPULAR, too. I just started flipping through 'Handel' today, and there it was - my favorite operas when I was about 5 years old...

@d3sired It is an aria. Thanks for the inappropriate and offensive hypocrisy, though.

I love when people who have no idea what they're saying make critical comments. It's almost funny.
That said, this is way too slow. I'd love to hear her sing this at a more appropriate tempo.
