Yes, I was. We've trained for night drops for well over a year, but this was the first time our unit has done night drops in an actual fire.
There has to be a serious threat to life for us to do it, but given the danger level of this fire...there was no doubt about the need for night drops.
Personally from my view up there, I thought the fire could have spread throughout APS and down into the East Side had we not done the night drops.

I thought fire fighting aircraft weren't aloud to fight fires at night?

They normally don't, but they used night vision given the extreme danger to the homes. The risk was still very high since there are many power lines and tall obstructions.

Were you on this chopper? It was pretty intense to see the drop so close to where we were.
