Taking the roles of researchers, writers, actors, musicians, dancers and stage-crafters, the 4th grade students at Francis W. Parker School, Chicago produced yet another fabulous production of the traditional Greek play. This years play focused on the early myths of ancient Greece, going as far back as the Creation myth. Students researched these early myths and wrote the scripts for each scene, finding and expressing important themes in ancient Greek storytelling: explaining nature and natural events, heeding the warnings of the gods and ones parents, the nature of power and its sometimes corruptive influence and the nature of heroism. Once editing was finished, the 4th graders turned in their writers caps and stepped into their roles as actors. With Ms. Beh and classroom teachers, the 4th graders worked on their individual characters, choral parts and staging. All the while students were hard at work in the music room with Ms. Foustalieraki learning two songs from ancient Greece, singing, dancing and choosing musical sound effects to further dramatize the play.
