The attacks on Indian priests in Nepals Pashupatinath temple, failed to disturb the harmony between the Nepali and Indian students studying at a temple in Indias holy town of Varanasi.

The Indian priests were recently attacked by Maoist rebels when they were performing a purification ceremony. The Maoists were demanding important religious jobs be given to Nepalis.

Nepali students at the Varanasi temple aren't giving the incident much thought.

[Medini Prasad, Nepali Student]:
"We are not much concerned about the incident. All of us here study together, be it Indians or Nepalis or anyone, without any differences. Our work is to learn. We do not even know much about it. These are political matters and politics does not concern us much.

Temple priests says its important to respect everyone at the school.

[Teknath Upadhyay, Nepali Priest]:
They should give respect to all the priests despite any considerations of who they are or where they are. They should give them respect like we are given in India, in Kashi or any part of the country. Even the priests there should be shown respect by the government as well as the people of Nepal.

Last year Nepal's former Maoist-led government sacked three south Indian priests serving at the temple and replaced them with Nepali ones.

  • 1:05 Mr Teknath Upadhyay is one of the priest at the Kashi Visvanath temple (the most revered temple for Lord Shiva), I saw him personally during my visit to Varanasi this year (6/11). This shows one thing, even today anyone may take refuge under Mother India just like how the Jews and Zoroastrians did regardless of their nationality. Too bad, due to various circumstances Indians are now despised in many places.
