Friends of Kim - Documentary 8/8

North Korea is the country many love to hate. Declared as a nation on the axis of evil by George W. Bush but embraced by an international delegation of friends: the Korean Friendship Association.They set out for a march through North Korea. Its aim: to show solidarity with the regime and the North Korean people. The authorities even allowed some US citizens in and an American journalist from ABC.

This 'International March for Korea's Peace and Reunification' is organised by the KFA, the Korean Friendship Association; a worldwide group of supporters of North Korea. Its leader is a 29 year old Spanish citizen, Alejandro Cao de Benos de Les y Perez. Originating from an aristocratic family he heads an organization with mainly young members who are fed up with the consumerism of the Western world.

In 12 days the 22 participants of the march travel through a country full of monuments, propaganda and poverty. Friends of Kim is a film about idealism, trust and crime. What begins as a magical mystery tour ends in a road to claustrophobia.

@avestictradition The thing is that the prostitutes working for the great leader's pleasure and in the hotels can't be called "prostitutes", but "juche lovers"; as for the thieves they already have Alejandro there and about the drugs, i bet Alejandro and the great leader smoked them all leaving the people without any.

@modshroom Right, that's why I'm saying (in Spanish) that he's an accomplice of that sinister government, because he goes out there spreading the lies that the Korean Big Brother wants us to believe, that that is a paradise for workers (it seems paradise run out of food), that there's no political repression, that all hardships are because of the US. So NK criticizes the capitalist countries, the same that are giving them money to help the country feed the population. It's not that I consider capitalism the ultimate state of perfection of human society, but what's for sure is that communist countries have proved once and again that the system doesn't work. Soviet Union fell, Cuba is a joke, North Korea can't even feed its population and all share the same, total ban on free speech and continuous manipulation.

This was extremely depressing documentary, I got especially freaked out when the reporter got in to the mess. Luckily nothing happened to the group and they're all back safe. The atmosphere, suspiciousness, stealing the property of the filmmaker, hypocrisy etc reminds me of something that Eric Blair, a.k.a Orwell wrote. That's right, he wrote a satire of a stalinist regime where Inner Circle of party and armament keeps the people on the brink of starvation so they can't rebel against the regime!

By the way, the Norwegian KFA is the largest out of all the "Korean Friendship Associations" in Scandinavia.
