Christmas Lullaby for Hobos

It's Christmas Eve
and I am grateful to be here in our warm home
with the fire burning nicely,
plenty of firewood and groceries,
and most of the family safely out of the snow.

Tragically, we see record numbers of our neighbours
living without homes and jobs
even as oil companies and defence contractors
and private prisons post record profits.
Let us not forget those less fortunate,
let us appreciate our freedoms and prosperity,
and let us determine that we will work together
to end the rewarding of greed and mismanagement,
and the punishing of victims.
There is enough for all, if we choose to share.

This song is dedicated to those without homes
at this season of the year
which can be so blessed and so difficult.
And to one lost child in particular.

My late father told me that on a few occasions back in the '30s, the cops were kind enough to arrest him so he could get out of the cold for the night and get a warm meal. The idea's a bit bothersome and surreal, but touching at the same time.
