Pushing (hard) the envelope of improvisation "housing" in solo concerts. When introducing classical themes, it is my intention (only) to bring my temperament to the performance, respecting the composition/composer, while allowing myself freedom (to perform effectively). This is my first attempt at presenting this piece. Posting this despite some questionable" moments (stumbling on both melody and form , and quoting "Nature Boy", all by 1:30). Baby steps" now, as I begin traveling this path.
Performed at the Central Baptist Church, Millville, NJ on 1-23-10.

Additional selections from this concert will be posted on this year's channel (joeholtsnotes2010) in the coming days.

  • Joe, This is such a departure from your McKenna style. It shows your range, which it truly remarkable. So beautiful!

  • I really appreciate this - thank you!

  • Joe, I continue to look at you as an inspiration and motivation. We all strive as musicians to acquire what you have already found and use freely with your musicianship. When I set forth on ventures such as these, I begin over thinking it and consequently rap myself around the proverbial telephone pole! *****

    Thanks for your art, Joe...

  • This is a beautiful comment, Jason (the first half), and I am deeply moved by it. Yes, I am just beginning to understand that this now transcends thinking, logical processes, and even hearing (the tonal relationships). Simply put, it's (a discipline of) prayer. It's much more natural to "speak" than it is to "listen". To "Be still, and know..." is a transport to a deeper knowing. It is a life changing experience to begin (to understand) to put this into practice. Thank you, as always!

  • If I could have one musical prayer answered it would be that I could play the piano with the heart and passion that you do brother. Simply a gift from our Father in Heaven and lots of hard work. Thanks for the blessing.

  • .Tim, you have no lack of heart or passion. Anyone reading this who finds Tim Dove singing Go Tell it on the Mountain on this YT channel will know it too.

    Thanks

  • @63266 Wow - what an endorsement!

    Thank you :)

  • I absolutely, 100% loved every single note of your improvisation...there is not even a single non necessary or irrelevant phrase in your improvisation. It was such a clean and strong improvisation. Loved it …wow

  • @joeholtsnotes - Thanks Joe. As much as I hate to admit it, I'm not quite to the point yet where I can quiet all of my thoughts when improvising. But only then does true improvising happen. Its a catch 22. Your thoughts on the subject are deeply appreciated and admired.

  • Give it time... :)

    Thanks!
