I don't believe that a movie can come close to capturing what the book conveys and portrays regarding the life in India. But I hope taht if a movie is made the directors will do the best possible job in making it like the book and as realistic and fantastic as possible. I think this guy's story is real and very interesting. I doubt it was all made up. I dont' know. Why isn't he re arrested though? Not that I want him to be, but what happened with that? I'll look at more videos and try to find

as an ex-con and escapee, i have to say WOW!!! somethings in life you can't explain unless you went through them, and as i'm on my personal shantaram, this guy is for real 100%, don't forget that some of the people are still in bombay, so names and certain details would change, as for the film, gregory is a big guy and russel crow should play him.

Gregory - is Karla real? Is Lisa real? Was Prakabar real - a lovely wonderful guy.
Shantaram is the best book I have read for years and has totally got under my skin. If its not true contratulations on your talent - but I suspect as an ex - expat that it is real. Good Luck and much love to you - Carole Coope.

Shantaram was a work of fiction. Obviously. Upon reading it, however, the reader (the true reader), must realize that it's a work of non-fiction just as much as "The Sun Also Rises," by Hemingway was, or "Factotum" by Bukowski was. Books like "On The Road," "Sons and Lovers," "Of Human Bondage," "Voyage au bout de la nuit" by Celine..., hell , "The Theif's Journal" by Jean Genet. Books like these and many more were auto-biographical. Fuck. The greatest books are like this. As is Shantaram

i think the movie has been in the making for quite a while now. i hear it should come out in a year or 2... but they had/are having some sort of problems which started with the writers strike. if you just google it you'll find more info.
