Bob Keeshan and Mr. Green Jeans (Lumpy Brannum) with the Jimmy Carroll Orchestra on a 45 rpm.
If you're young, you've probably never heard of Captain Kangaroo. If you're old like me, maybe this song will mean something to you.

  • Please turn the record over! The one I used to have had 'Happy Hands' on the other side. Oh where did that old record go?

  • I finally got around to looking at the flip side. Yes, it is 'Happy Hands' I can't say that I ever remember listening to that song, but I must have at some point, right?

  • Oh my....I have sung this in my head for fifty odd years now! So fun to hear this again after so long. Thanks!

  • I wasn't the only one who wondered why Mr. Green Jeans suddenly knew so little about animals. An even bigger irony was how much music Captain Kangaroo recorded. Bob Keeshan admitted that his lack of musical talent caused problems during his tenure as Clarabelle. Besides many recordings, he also gave concerts throughout the country.

  • I've had this song stuck in my head for days. Thanks for posting it and bringing back so many fun memories.

  • Silly, fun, and with just the right amount of truth.

It's been over 20 years and probably more, and I still miss the Captain, sniff, sob.

  • @NadaTall Now that is just silly- no horse could fit in a pair of those......

  • This is wonderful! I also had this record, b/w "Happy Hands", just as you mentioned. I think I listened to both of them about equally, and I recall the irony that in "Horse" Mr. Green Jeans was the person who needed educating on the various species they saw at the zoo, since on the show he was the domesticated animal and wildlife expert. As a young child, I just felt something was askew there....

  • my dad used 2 sing this 2 me & my sister when we were lil grls :) im so happy i found it!

  • What wonderful memories. Thanx so much !

  • Thanks ! This song gets in my head but I could never remember more than a horse with stripe pajamas!! Thanks!!!

  • I was just singing this to my daughter and grand daughter earlier this month! Thanks for sharing.
