Meet my extremely charming guide to the Matenadaran or manuscripts library of Armenia. She shows us manuscripts that describe Armenia as the first country to declare itself a Christian nation in 301AD, and shows us magnificently colored manuscripts that have never been restored because of Armenian use of clever sources for color--including bugs--and garlic that helped in preservation. She also introduces us to Anania Shirakatsi who mused that the earth was round before Galileo and others and shows us the biggest and the smallest manuscripts--the largest weighs 28 kilos with each page made from parchment (not paper) which took 1 cow skin per page. That's 603 cows--some BBQ! Although 17,000 manuscripts are housed here, there are some 28,000 Armenian manuscripts all over the world. Many have been donated to the book depository/research center including one from a donor in Los Angeles and another in New York.
