Yes, Bullock is the contender but cannot win because her role could have been played by any good actress of today (quoting loghen01). The Oscars committee is aware of that: they're not that stupid.

OMG yes, I was shocked that Bullock who is just another Jennifer Aston of today created so much buzz. Notice how Ms. Bullock has always played Sandra Bullock. The true test of acting is having these candidates line up and perform Julia Child and see who can do it. Obviously, not even Cate Blanchett can do it. The problem with Blanchett is her voice. You always hear the Blanchett voice in all roles she played. Hence, Ms. Streep remains the queen of acting.

Awesome music, what's the song?
Also, if Avatar cleans up, I will be SEVERELY disappointed in the Academy. All it had were effects. Really cliche' storyline, recycled Jurassic Park sound effects, poor acting...it should win best ANIMATED film.
I'm rooting for Hurt Locker or Basterds. Both were simply brilliant.
