The great battle of Leipzig (16-19 October, 1813), the largest battle in the Napoleon wars. Tsar Alexander I and the swedish Crownprince Karl Johan was there among over 500 000 soldiers! Here Napoleon led a large defeat and must withdraw it´s troops after four days of bloody fighting.

Before this battle Karl Johan and his North-army had defeated two french armys at: "Dennewitz" and "Grossbeeren". Also my relative: Johan August Sandels was an importent commander in this army.

After the battle Tsar Alexander I was the most powerful man in Europe, and he and Karl Johan were good friends. Karl Johan was highest commander of the North-army (about 120 000 man), most russians but there were 30 000 swedes too. He arrives after two days to the battlefield and played an imoportent part of the victory...the swedish artillery also done a good job at this battle. The russians, prussians and the austrians did the heaviest fightings but at the end of the battle it was swedish storm-troops who were first to invade Leipzigs square!

Soldiers from 20 nationalities were present on the battlefield:

160 000 Frenchmen
150 000 Russians
115 000 Austrians
75 000 Prussians
20 000 Swedes
10 000 Poles
9 000 Italians
6 000 Saxons

At the third pic you can se Napoleon and Poniatowski. After this battle Napoleon was defeated in ground. The last pic show the monument of the great battle.

Franz Berwald has compose a classical piece wich had the name: "The battle of Leipzig".

Music: Russian folk-song.

You can listen to and buy Ulf Sawerts music (The CD: Juniskären, 12 songs) at this site:

  • @Caecarulf ur related to karl johan? vive la france my friend

  • @seminoleboy96 More...I mean...suppose that someone should have found a secret son to Napoleon in France...what a news that should have been!! But here in Sweden nothing happens...well, but Sweden is a strange country. Anyway...you have your general Bertrand to do research about and I have my Karl Johan, they both lived exciting lifes...and we both have roots from France...perhaps we can meet someday...at the french riverian!! Bounjour my friend!

    Ulf

  • @seminoleboy96 More...have you read general Bertrands book about Napoleon? I have read a lot of books about Jean Baptiste Bernadotte...also about Napoleon. I know that there is people in France today (descendens from Jeans older brother) who has the name Bernadotte, but I don´t know them. The Bernadottes who lives in Sweden has show now interest of my discoveries and investigations...nor the media too. It´s very strange.

  • @seminoleboy96 Oh General Bertrand...that was impressiv!! I have read about him now on wikipedia...really impressiv!! So...your great, great, great, grandfather was fighting against my (probably), mothers, mothers, mothers, fathers, father...Crownprince Karl Johan at: Dennewitz, Grossbeeren and Leipzig (1813)!! So we both comes from France...I from south-france (Pau) and you? Have you been in France? Do you have relatives there? I have only been in Paris...just for two days,

    Ulf

  • @Caecarulf no Bertrand. he guarded the bridge at liepzig but then some idiot blew it prematurely trapping the rear force. He was made count of the illyrian provence in italy and went with napoleon to exile both times and wrote his memoirs thats the definitive source we have of napoleon when he was at saint helena. he later escorted napoleons remains to paris

  • @seminoleboy96 Ok, and who was your great, great, great grandfather?

    Ulf

  • the only reason napoleon lost was a briliant plan devised by the allies of never attacking napoleon openly just take out his weaker generals while they gathered enough men to even napoleon couldnt beat. it was a rather genius plan but luckily my great great great grandfather saved the french army from total annihalation at leipzig

  • This poem is about Tsar Alexander I (in russian) composed by Alexander Pushkin:

прaвитель cлабый и лукaвой, плешивый шeгaль, Враг труда, над нами Царcтвoвaл тoгдa.
