Buy Nothing Day in the United States always falls on the Friday after Thanksgiving. It's a day to protest against consumerism simply by buying nothing. Adbusters states that it "isn't just about changing your habits for one day" but "about starting a lasting lifestyle commitment to consuming less and producing less waste".

Do both?

Yeah, but if a whole bunch of people deliberately didn't buy anything on a given day, that could deliver an actual message. Kinda like how boycotting a given product can deliver a message; sure, some people weren't gonna buy it anyway, but that's a different thing than making a point not to.

So, you would get fired if your business had no customers for ONE DAY?

Really? Yeah, check out adbusters*org/campaigns/bnd and scroll down or my Buy Nothing Day facebook group.
Keep it up, man.

But I buy nothing most days already. I don't think I've bought anything in the last week. Not even groceries. Unless you count the electricity I use, my phone and internet service which runs 24/7. I used postage to mail something - though I paid for the postage months ago. Do most people buy things EVERY day? That would be such a nuisance, to go out and buy something every day. Why don't you make November buy-nothing month? There'd be no point in abstaining for a day. Like fasting for an hour.

No...it would be get fired day. If nobody actually bought anything that day, nobody would have a job that day. Buying things is what gives people jobs and increases standards of living.
