That's the most common question you will probably hear from the mouths of new web masters. So many people think you can just set up a site and have traffic, or people visiting. But you have to do something to get that traffic.

If you pay for traffic, then you will need a pretty large budget, and the returns will pretty much be a one time thing. As soon as you stop paying, people stop coming. Just the same, social networking and bugging friends and family may bring you a huge influx of traffic, but no one is really going to stick around. The only way to gain repeat visitors without hassle or Donald Trump's budget, is to get free search engine traffic.

How do you do such a thing? Simple: Get your website to appear on the first page for relevant words in search engines. Google, Yahoo!, and MSN/Bing are the main players in the current game, and getting to appear on any one of them (on the first page) is tough cookies, but possible and will bring you all the people you could have ever wanted. To get free search engine traffic from Google is ideal, but Yahoo! and MSN/Bing will still get you a fair following.

For example, if you built a site around luxury cars, then you would naturally want to "rank" (or appear on the first page of search engines) for keywords (the words people type into Google) like "Lambourghini", "Aston Martin", and "Ferrari". Then you would get free search engine traffic for all of them. But ranking for these terms is hard because of the algorithms that search engines use. Well, it's hard if you don't do anything, that is.

You need to actively work with these algorithms and do things to promote your site. Write a couple of articles using free article submission sites, and provide a link back to your own site with the anchor text (the blue text that you click on in the link) saying the term you want to rank for. You can do this by simply typing Anchor Text. Copy and paste your website's name into the place that says yourwebsite, and change anchor text to the term you want to appear on the first page for.

Also ask people to bookmark and share your site with their friends for free search engine traffic.

You can pull a lot of free search engine traffic to you, but you have to work at it. The longer and more obscure keywords (like early 1950s African luxury car) don't take as many anchor text links to rank for.

This is the simple way to get free search engine traffic- remember, you need lots of traffic for your website to be successful. Don't count out search engine traffic just because it's free!
