Medved Autoplex in Wheat Ridge is located just at the base of the foothills in Colorado. We are well versed in driving in snowy or icy conditions. Learn how engine braking or downshifting instead of braking can help you maintain control of your car and drive safe in snow and ice. You don't have to be afraid of the road! Your car has many defensive features such as ASB or even the ability to manually downshift automatic transmissions.

@1956tlm we agree, people should not be flying along at high speeds then down shift all the sudden. We're showing people that first of all it's important to stay at a manageable speed on slick surfaces (so you car react to anything from a quick stop to a sharp turn or even car in front of you having a problem). If you are already traveling at a slower speed, and you engine brake instead of using your brakes, it can help you maintain even more control. Thanks for your feedback.

Downshifting suddenly on slippery roads is likely to send you into a skid. Downshift on an area not as slippery, stay in the low gear, and GO SLOW. Thirty-nine years of driving in Minnesota.
