These men have been around long enough to have seen the world as they knew it turned up-side-down. They have had to help re-define their country and culture. They, and most of the really greeat griots hae done so with a special style. They have their roots still in tact, and have adopted all the innovations (like the ubiquitous bloody guitar) that they can use and created some music that a developing (or even fully-developed and modern) can be proud of. This is a healthy artistic culture.
