MRI is a much better tool for looking at the hard organs and vascular issues. CT is a better tool for looking into the bowels. If you are in the ER with abdominal or pelvic pain they will order a CT because it is so much faster, but I would try asking for MRI if they suspect kidney, pancreas, gallstones etc.

CT is not just better for the bowels. We also do highly sensitive studies for all of the other organs, and blood vessels as well. CT angiograms will replace the traditional angiogram (and soon, as we are already doing many MANY angiographic studies). It is no longer just for bowels.

Actually, this seems to be a very balanced look at CT Scans, raising the question up front about whether they are worth the risk and expense. There is certainly no attempt to advocate their unfettered use here, but to explain that they are undeniably powerful diagnostic tools.
